Brazilian Sugaring: What It Is, What to Expect, and How We Do It at Avella Beauty

There is a reason the Brazilian has become one of the most requested services in any wax or sugaring studio. It is the most thorough hair removal option available for the bikini area, it lasts significantly longer than shaving, and with consistent appointments the results only improve over time.

What Studios Mean When They Say Brazilian, French, or Full

A Brazilian, in its most common definition, removes everything. Front, sides, between the legs, and the back. Some studios offer the option to leave a small strip or triangle in the front, and some clients request this. Either way, the defining characteristic of a Brazilian is that it addresses the entire area including the back.

A French wax or French bikini removes hair from the front and sides but leaves the back untouched. It is more thorough than a standard bikini line clean-up but does not go all the way.

A bikini line or standard bikini only cleans up what falls outside the underwear line. Minimal and quick, designed for coverage rather than thoroughness.

At Avella we use straightforward language. When clients book a Brazilian, we remove everything. If you want to keep something in the front, tell us at the start of your appointment and we will adjust. There is no wrong answer and there is no judgment.

Standard Brazilian vs. Maintenance Brazilian at Avella

A standard Brazilian is what we perform for first-time clients and for returning clients who are coming back after more than six weeks since their last appointment. When hair has had more time to grow or has not been sugared on a consistent schedule, it tends to be coarser and denser, which means the process takes a little longer and can feel more uncomfortable.

A maintenance Brazilian is for clients returning within four to five weeks of their previous appointment. When you are on a consistent sugaring schedule, the hair coming back is progressively finer and sparser. It has been removed from the root repeatedly, which weakens the follicle over time and produces softer regrowth. A maintenance appointment is faster, more comfortable, and the results last longer.

The difference matters because sugaring rewards consistency in a way that shaving never can. Every appointment builds on the last one.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

At Avella, a lot of intention goes into making this service as comfortable as possible. We take into account your skin type, hair texture, and where you are in life, whether that means tight hips, postpartum changes, pregnancy, or anything else your body is navigating. You will be guided through positions throughout the service and we will move at a pace that works for you.

We use a natural sugaring paste made from sugar, lemon, and water, applied against the direction of hair growth and removed with the direction of growth. This is the opposite of waxing, and it is why sugaring causes less trauma to the surrounding skin and tends to be a more comfortable experience overall. A standard Brazilian takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes. A maintenance appointment is typically faster.

How to Prepare

Hair should be at least a quarter inch long, which is roughly two to three weeks of growth after shaving. For a first session or reset, closer to three weeks gives us more to work with and tends to make the process smoother. Exfoliate the bikini area gently 24 to 48 hours before your appointment, not the day of. Come with clean dry skin and skip the moisturizer in that area on the day of your service.

Aftercare

The bikini area needs a little extra attention after a sugaring service. Avoid tight clothing for the rest of the day and wear loose cotton underwear. Skip hot baths, hot tubs, saunas, and pools for 24 hours. Avoid sun exposure on the area for 24 to 48 hours. Begin gentle exfoliation three to four days after your appointment, then two to three times per week going forward.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Brazilian and a French wax?
A Brazilian removes all hair from the front, sides, between the legs, and the back. A French wax removes the front and sides but leaves the back. At Avella, when you book a Brazilian, we remove everything unless you tell us otherwise.

What is a maintenance Brazilian?
A maintenance Brazilian is for clients returning within four to five weeks. Hair is finer and sparser, making the service faster, more comfortable, and longer lasting.

Does a Brazilian sugaring hurt?
The bikini area is one of the more sensitive areas, particularly on a first session. Most clients who have experienced both waxing and sugaring report that sugaring is noticeably less uncomfortable.
